The tuner has Ford blood on his hands.....if it pop'd at top rpm where the engine was making big power then you can fault the rod's strength.

    Brandon knows what's up here.

Re: Clear Plenum and Pulses (Video)

it looks like it built too much cylinder pressure around peak torque and bent/broke rods, due to (in my opinion) too much timing in it at this point in the curve. couple degrees less could have lowered the cylinder pressure enough to let it live. there are many other factors at play, however that was probably the only variable being manipulated as they put boost in it from previous pulls.

think of the combustion process starting when the piston is way down the hole. crank pushing to rod/piston up and the combustion expansion trying to push it back down. if this combustion process starts to early, you can probably imagine how the rotating assembly will effectively run into this "wall". something has to give if there is big cylinder pressure built too early in the stroke, in this case it was the rod. by pulling a few degrees extra of timing at this point, the combustion process would have started a bit later, meaning the piston would have been closer to tdc. this delay in expansion would have allowed for more of the combustion to occur after tdc as the piston/rod is on its way down. hope that makes a bit more sense.

    That makes total sense thanks!

If he was running a higher percentage of e would it have helped as well?

potentially. like i said there are many factors. higher % may have slowed the burn and delayed the big pressure build slightly, however probably not drastically enough to save this deal. imo

No doubt the rods weren't strong enough for what he was up to but....they could of been saved(read what Brandon said) to pop under full power. Think of it as how much hp it is putting out at 4500rpm...500 maybe 600... Those rods will handle that all day long. Peak torque timing is a tricky game...7* is low and 12* is high for dsm but now how do you ramp it up to full timing like 21-25* in the mater of 2000rpm?

I agree with what you are saying Curtis, but I won't throw Shane under the bus on this. He is a very smart tuner, and as you said earlier, he wouldn't put his name on the line by doing something stupid. Those rods (he found out later) are rated for 1000hp... probaby rated at the flywheel, so we were way over their operating range. Plus I belive it is the torque that killed the rods not horsepower, he was over 900 ft/lbs at the wheels... which will be about 1100 @ the flywheel. Way over what they are supposed to take.... So it was a poor combination for the application. Barry also turned the boost up by putting 2 psi on the dome side of the gate, the manual boost controller was maxed at 21 with the spring he had. So there are a few contributing factors.

After seeing how they failed, an H beam rod doesn't really make sense in a lower RPM boosted motor, you need the strength out at the edges of the beam. Live and learn... but an expensive mistake.for Barry.

Thanks for clearing that up Rob. The home brew is probably the safest bet for everyone, clean, pure, and you know whats going in your car.

Need to get these cars in the grudge race list so we can line up this year
