Alright so I came up with this to hold the cams instead of the tool
Timing belt plus 2 pairs of vice grips equals a win. Now it's just a matter of getting the bolts to crack. Heard horror stories about these things... 8 ft breaker bars on them and shit like that. They used to be a 17mm bolt holding them on but in the newer years they changed it to an Allen head bolt instead which is absolutely retarded because they just want to round out when you put any substantial pressure on them. So worst case scenario I end up welding a big ass nut to them and buy new bolts for them. So far I got the driver side intake cam off but the exhaust one is stuck pretty good...

Well after fighting with cam bolts for a few days I got fed up and drilled the two exhaust cam bolts off and presto cam gears off and un threaded the stud from the cams with my fingers haha, guess they get stuck to the front of the cam gear pretty good.
After that i took the oil pump off found it had a small leak in it. I'll probably get up buying the 08+ pump for it as its and 11mm pump as opposed to a 10 mm and bolts up no problem.
Next up was the water pump
First batch of parts showed up too. Got an entire gasket and seal kit from subaru and a southbend stage 1 clutch
That's about all I got done yesterday. Hopefully today I'll be able to pull the heads and assess the damage and start ordering some goodies![]()

We got heads off!
I can's see where the headgasket was leaking but I'm not entirely sure what to look for... They weren't cracked anywhere from what I can see.
Short block in all it's glory
Cylinders look too be in pretty good shape I'm about 97% sure I don't need to get it bored out.
When I get back from work the plan is to tear the short block down and see how the crank looks. Hopefully be able to start ordering parts soon and and get this thing ready to race again.

Haven't updated this in a while as I've been busy. But the Block is all apart brought it to the machine shop a few days ago to get the bore checked and cleaned. Need to order pistons, rods, bearings, head studs and a few odds and ends. Then I can get the pistons fit to the block and I can start putting it back together. They finished shaving my heads down and they look really good to my far from expert eye. So just waiting on some money now and can start the fun part of the project.
Anyways parts wise I'm going to go with Wiseco forged pistons, manley roads, ACL race bearings, ARP head studs, OEM case bolts. Probably going to get a new oil pump- the 08+ one bolts right up but is an 11mm pump as opposed to a 10mm so it flows a little more. Going to redo all my vacuum lines I think, mine are pretty brittle and probably leaking so some nice silicone ones are on the list.
So kind of in a holding pattern until I can order some parts but got lots of stuff I can clean up while I wait.

slowwwww down.... who has the block?
If you are getting pistons dont let them touch it yet.
You will need the block re-bored if you are going forged because they need a different piston to wall clearance compared to stock. Read forums, but the normal is to go .020" oversize to get fresh walls and set up the proper piston to wall clearance. (this clearance will be on the spec sheet that comes with the pistons)
Tell shop to just do a basic cleaning and visual on the block, then get your pistons to them before you let them do anything else.
And agree on a price before you let them do anything and stick to it... seems like shops in town like to quote low and when you go pick up your engine its $500+ more than they said it would be.
