    STI's Getting a Rebuild!

Happy Days everyone my head gasket blew!!! Yaaaaaay!!

So the story goes I drove my car to work when my girlfriend was back from school over xmas. Made it there no problem, I was on my way home got to my parents house to pick the dog up and noticed my car was idling like a tractor ok? So it throws a few codes at me having to do with the ACVS timing solenoid. So I look itup did all the shit the interwebs said to try nothing still idling like shit. So talked to Shawn stole some tool from him. Compression tested it came out low 90-100 (Booo). Did a leak down test on it too while I was at it, There was only 10% leakdown which isnt bad at all for how many miles are on the car. Small amount of air coming out the oil cap, leaking past the rings. So throw it all back together awesome! start it up seems to idle fine great. So I take it for a spin around the block.. barely made it back to my house white smoke of death coming out the tail pipe. Drained my oil and low and behold coolant in it. Let the fun begin.

    MMM coolanty

Halfway through pulling the motor. not bad for the first time doing it

Annnd she's out after an epic battle trying to separate the trans and the motor...

On the stand ready to rip her apart

Definitely time for a new clutch and probably flywheel

Intake manifold removed as well wiring harness, turbo, vacuum lines and coolant piping.

Next up is exhaust manifold and up pipe, timing components, valve covers then we can get to the goodies

Anyways the plan is Forged Wisco piston, Manley h beams, acl bearings, probably arp studs. Cobb just came out with a flex fuel kit that runs off their accessport so that might happen too.

Host the pictures on an external site. The forum on allows a certain amount so it doesn't take up too much bandwidth.

As for the gasket, that's some shitty luck. As these motors known for having head gaskets failures?

If you're pasting the url in the text area make sure you deselect the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"

Maybe go for more eventually. I just want to have something that I know will hold some more power and not really have to worry about. 400 probably a more realistic number to go for.

Well did a little bit more today need to get a special tool to take the cam sprockets off.. lucky I found them on sale online.

Anyways got the up pipe/exhaust manifold off today, as well as the oil pan, oil pick up, baffle, oil cooler.

Random reference picture of the coolant return lines.

    Oil cooler setup

another reference pic of the oil cooler

Oil pan and oil pick up removed

Blurry pic of the oil baffle removed

The bastards I need to special tool for...

    Passenger side bastards

That's about all i got done today tools are ordered hopefully be here (Rydens) soon. The cam sprocket bolts are apparently a bastard to get off... hopefully they done give me too much trouble.

so next on the list is: wait for tools
    remove cam sprockets
    oil pump
    water pump.
    few sensors
    few oil feed lines
Then I think i can start taking the valve covers and heads off.
