    Question about Ontario Saftey Standards

Last winter my 4WD stopped working after I changed my transmission, and "Serv 4WD" appears on my instrument panel. This seems to be a common problem with the 04-06 canyons and the fix seems to be different for everyone. So far I've taken the wiring harness out and peeled back the loom and tape to check for breaks, corrosion or any sign on damage to the wires, what i found was the connector going to the Encoder motor on the transfer case was corroded really bad, so bad I took the plug apart one pin at a time and scrubbed off the green corrosion so they were shining like new and re-did one wire at a time to be sure none were mixed in the process. I thought for sure that was my problem, so I did all the plugs on the transmission part of the harness like that. nothing changed. I took apart the encoder motor and cleaned all the contact points and made sure that it functions properly, from what i could tell it seems ok, the motor spins when i apply 12V to it. the 4WD switch seems fine as the lights come on with the key on, then they go out after a couple seconds. and it throws a code - DTC C0327 Encoder Circuit malfunction. People have had window leaks and the transfer case control module is under the drivers seat so i took it out and inspected it and there isnt one bit of corrosion there. The only way Ive been able to get my truck into 4WD over the past year is to climb underneath, switch it into 4WD manually using the shaft/gear from the encoder motor, and I wired a switch to engage the front axle solenoid. So it works, its just really inconvenient to use.

So my question is, Does this need to be fixed to pass an safety inspection?

    I sifted through: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/tru...n-standard.pdf

    and what I found was,

    "b) transfer case

    - evidence that transfer case is not
    functioning properly (for example,
    wheel lock
    -up or shuddering
    experienced in vehicle while driving
    in a straight line)"

My transfer case works properly, just not the electronics bolted to it.

    Thanks in advance.

And i can just unplug the TCCM under the seat to turn off the "Serv 4WD" light, but obviously i still cant use my 4WD buttons on my dash.

Re: Question about Ontario Saftey Standards

I can honestly say i have never tried anyones 4x4 when performing a safety. Weather or not that's right is another thing but personally i just test drive the vehicle and if it doesnt sound like the case is going to blow apart or a bearing somewhere is gone and it's not leaking, i dont worry about it. Just my opinion

I doubt that would be a safety item, 4x4 is on option and not required to be used by any means.

Call a garage and ask, you will get the quick and correct answer.... Just say the switch i broken and ask if its needed for safety?

im pretty sure you cant have any dash CEL lights on to pass a safety anymore, easy enough though just remove the bulb from the cluster.
